I know, I find (and read) the oddest things. This is the journal of one Nathaniel Bryceson for the Year of our Lord, 1846.

It is being serialized as daily entries by Westminster Council and it's a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of an average Londoner. (White, male, upper-working/lower-middle class.)

I was looking for background to the Crimean War (due to these photos: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/related/?q=Fenton%2C%20Roger%2C%201819-1869&fi=name)

Random clicking will take you everywhere ;P

I've been following it since early March, and it's kinda cool. Sometimes history is so close, you can smell it!

I like reading anything that real people wrote (as opposed to a novel - which I enjoy too) it's an amazing feeling - *how* people thought in different times, and about day-to-day things.

The Library of Congress's site is usually a good source of info, though I think I've ransacked the British Museum online a time or two. Not sure whether they are up yet, but the Archive of the Indies is in the process of digitizing its collection and I thought they were going to make portions of it available to the public online. Have you checked the John Carter Brown Library. They're putting more of their collection online.

The journal is very cool.

He currently seems to have some 'creepy stalker' thing going on with an elderly descendant of John Bunyan! Weird, hunh?

This is interesting.

It is! Some of it is timeless, like his excitement at a pay increase - and some is deeply strange, like attending public hangings.
