In LA

Jan 03, 2009 08:24

Currently in Houma LA with the lovely wife snuggled in bed with the computers. We are such geeks. And not Greeks, even though My Big Fat Greek Wedding is playing on the TV.

And yes, I am typing on an EEE. Don't tell the rest of the KATHouse. So far I am really impressed with it.

I was a wimp and got the XP version. Now I need a cd/dvd drive to load office on this one. I figured you got the Linux version. I'm looking forward to playing with it. I tried it a bit in the store but didn't want to step out of my comfort zone.

Tell me more about this Eee pc. I need a new computer badly, but can't afford a regular laptop with decent specs, so I was wondering how this stacks up. The biggest issue I can see is no optical drive and a shortage of places selling them with Linux installed.

Where did you get yours?

Specs... it is underpowered. 512megs of DDR2 ram. 900mgz Celeron mobile processor. 4gig flash SSD hard drive. 1024 x 600 8.9inch display. SD slot so I can easily add in more disk space. 3 USB2 ports

But it takes less then 20 seconds to start. Finds WiFi great. Portable as all get out. Less then 1kg in weight. The interface is pretty intuitive. It's a couple of tabs (Favorites, Work, Internet, Play, Learn) with big icons on them. Comes with quite a bit of software already installed.

At the same time, you could pick up a used laptop from EPC. www.epcusa.com/shopping/

And no optic drive just means that you move the files to a jump drive to move them over, or down load off the net or share one on a LAN.
