Have you tried the Ariana Franklin Mistress of the Art of Death series? I've really enjoyed them, about a C12th female doctor trained in medical school in Salerno who is sent to the UK to aid Henry II and who has to pretend to assist a Moorish male because female doctors are the devils work. Very well written and good mysteries.
