...or it could have been a case where the horse, aware of the man's indecisiveness and uncertainty, took the leadership role (as horses regularly do every day in typically very mundane circumstances) and acted instinctively to protect itself and it's human companion. They are remarkably perceptive creatures, but I guess we'll never really know....

Absolutely, and that's the one I like to believe. I've heard some incredible stories of horses acting in ways that are most definitely deliberate, to save human lives, be it 'their' humans or others; as you say, they are remarkably perceptive, and capable of all sorts of things. That particular news story was a little ambiguous, but I'm well ready to believe the horse did what it did out of a protective instinct. They're really amazing creatures.:)
