SPN 7.19 & 7.20

May 01, 2012 09:10

I watched these episodes super late, mostly because I was out of town for a couple weeks, but on the whole, I liked them.

I liked the case in "Of Grave Importance." It was a twist on the classic salt and burn, that was more interesting and, of course, more emotional.

I guess I'll talk about Bobby in both eps here. Initially, I hated the idea of Bobby coming back as a ghost. But then we saw his face at the end of Party On, Garth, and I was just so happy to see him.

But now...I don't know. I've never liked the idea of him becoming a vengeful spirit, but it seems like they are going down that route. And I just don't love that. Now, I do think the possibility exists that he could still be resurrected. This is SPN after all, and there are entities that could bring him back (God, Death, an angel, even a healed Cas). So there is always that.

And I have to say...at the end of 7.20, they touch on those interesting themes of humans, our characters in particular, becoming monsters and what that means. It's been a theme for Sam and Dean for so long, and now the question has been raised for Bobby. So from a thematic standpoint, that's interesting - whether it's better to just pass on or to remain a ghost, particularly if you turn into a vengeful spirit, a "monster" which needs to be killed. And yeah, there's a certain irony in Dean Winchester, of all people, talking about the "natural order," but I got his point.

I just feel like it's too tragic for that to happen to the boys, to have to put own Bobby, too. And I don't like it as an end for Bobby. But...we will see. I'm holding out hope that this might end well.

I did like the minor female characters introduced in both these episodes. Annie struck me as an Ellen-lite...she was so like Ellen, but I did like her. I thought it was amusing that she'd slept with all three of them (though I can just see the reaction that some fans will have to that).

I really liked Charlie. She was funny and cute and I definitely wouldn't mind seeing more of her. I mean, as a female supporting character I know she has next to no chance of ever reappearing on the show unless she dies, but meh. I liked her.

I'm really not all that interested in the leviathans. I really feel like the apocalypse/end of the world plot has been done to death, and I'm just not finding the leviathans that compelling.

I'm missing the Cas mentions - I'm spoiler free so I don't know what's going on with him, beyond that he will be back, but...yeah.

There were some lighthearted moments in both eps that I liked - shower!Dean is always good, and I liked nerdy!Sam and flirty!coach!Dean. Also LOL at the HP references - gotta love it when crossovers become canon on SPN :)

Anyway, both eps were pretty good overall. I'm glad Bobby is back at least temporarily, and I enjoyed the new characters and cases. The end of the season is shaping up nicely.
