I won't say that I have eclectic tastes. Really when you think about it we all do unless you only ever listen to one genre ever. I can't imagine someone not finding something good that's outside of their norms at least once. "Man if it's not turbo reggae-jazz then it's crap!" I agree that some songs are more involved than others. I like to listen to more epic stuff while driving but found it's not good/fast enough for me when I'm working. (I was listening to a lot of The Birthday of Rei Ayanami OST and Escaflowne OST - I do love both of them but couldn't focus.) The mindless type seems to help me focus on my work better. (Some anime OPs, some kpop, some poprock).

Everything from Manson to Mozart is featured in my favorite music. The WoW soundtracks actually found their way onto Mom's computer. She heard me listening to 'em one day and liked it. Was shocked when I told her it was "video game" music.

For me, the ultimate thinking music is, has been, and always be, Mozart. I have studied and worked to Mozart for so long, that he is always my first choice when a clear head is crucial.
Beyond that, and thinking of just 20th and 21st century music, I mostly listen to music for relaxation or to help me get moving. I have music that is more thought-provoking, but I find I rarely listen to it.
