I'd like to point out that the film pronounces it "AHHng." It also pronounces Sokka's name "SOH-ka," not "SOCK-ah," and "EE-roh," not "EYE-roh."
This is the first I've heard of this and it baffles me. There seem to be only two possible explanations:
1. Everyone involved in the movie had so little familiarity with the TV show that they couldn't even get the names right. 2. They thought that they knew better than the characters CREATORS what the names should be.
I can't decide which of those two I think is more fucked up.
Nevertheless - great review as always, Momo. The kids were reading over my shoulder and we all laughed heartily!
It's funny how they decided the names from the series weren't being pronounced in an authentically Asian style, and yet featured NO ACTUAL ASIAN PEOPLE IN THE CAST (well... non-South Asian, anyway). Way to continue your astronomical success, Shyamalan!
I think we missed several parts of the film because every time they said "ONNG" we were compelled to hiss "AANG" under our breath. ALSO: they pronounced it "OVV-a-tar." Like, "ONNG, you are the OVVVVatar." FFFFF.
This thing is sounding more and more like prime material for a drinking game. I can envision a fun evening of putting in a DVD of this, yelling at the screen and cursing M.Night, followed by watching the best episodes of the series.
I'd say that's the way to go- don't pay for it, and watch the series after instead of before, so you're not reminded BEFORE going in how much better the animated version is. :( I think even people with very high tolerance for alcohol would be hard-pressed to survive a game where you do a shot every time they mispronounce a name. Maybe just stick to very small sips...
Great review. Definitely needed more Momo. Definitely needed more character development and to stop smacking me in the face with exposition, lol. The names thing bugged me but i accepted it. Didnt change that much for me. Asian pronunciation w/o Asians. w/e. ha I saw it in 3D AND 2D. Didnt even notice the 3D to be honest. Hilarious how they create Sokka/Yue's love story OFF CAMERA and then expect her sacrifice scene to be emotional for us. lol. scene was good but i cant get emotional over a love story i didnt see :p
I describe this movie as having brief moments of brilliance in a sea of wrong.
