I love Castrovalva! Great introduction, concept and supporting cast. And Tegan and Nyssa prove that they are quite capable of carrying the show successfully if they need to.
I'm quite a fan of the Fifth Doctor. The one criticism I'd make of this era is that he was often saddled with too many companions. We don't really get to know Nyssa and Tegan well enough because the focus is constantly shifting from one companion to another.
But Peter Davison was a splendid Doctor and the stories mostly stand up pretty well. Certainly far better than the current stuff. In fact I just may be getting into the mood for some Fifth Doctor watching myself.
I like the dynamic of the Fifth Doctor and Turlough. I'm really glad they're expanding on that in the audio dramas. I've always loved Turlough because he's so sarcastic.
I've always loved Turlough, he was much more suited to Five than Adric was and his banter with Tegan was very entertaining. Sarcastic companions are the best. :)
Actually, I think Five worked very well with two companions. Five/Tegan/Nyssa and Five/Tegan/Turlough are dead tied for my favorite team of the era. Three was one too many though and I'm glad they trimmed it down. Sadly, the writers weren't really up to doing an ensemble show at the time and it showed...pity.
Peter Davison is my childhood Doctor and is tied with William Hartnell as my favorite. I love flawed, fallible Doctors. I personally find them easier to relate to and cheer for.
On the whole I think 80s Who is underrated.
Definitely agree. I grew up on 80s era Doctor Who and it rather saddens me that it still has a notorious reputation. A lot of it not deserved.

The Black Guardian Trilogy is fantastic too (which is why I bought the DVD set as soon as I saw it. :))

I agree totally. A story with all the right Whovian ingredients.
