I am ignorant of the phrase's etymology, but I can say with certainty that I have never used it in that way or even thought of it that way. Ever.

I think it may be a science fiction term - may very well have originated from the navy, or some other technology-user who use autopilots and automated systems. Most likely it can be traced to a science fiction show involving space travel.
