'puter help

Feb 21, 2009 12:34

I've managed to get some malicious adware lodged in my 'puter this morn. Keeps launching browser ad windows at random intervals. AVG seems unable to track it down and remove it.

Anyone suggest how I find this thing and kill it?

I've always liked having 2-3 ways of protecting comp.

1.) router that you connect thru to get to the internet - basic firewall built into most routers often stymies viruses
2.) AdAware (spyware but worth a shot)
3.) PC-Cillin by TrendMicro
4.) HouseCall (free) by TrendMicro, although by this point you might not be able to access it because the virus might interfere with it
5.) Spybot Search and Destroy (spyware as well)

If and when, No.s 2-5 find something, WRITE DOWN what it is and google it
"xyzcrap.exe + removal" top 2-3 hits usually lead you to a techie site with good step-by-step removal instructions for even the most persistent bugs.
