Oh, Happy Day.

It's a great song. If you have iTunes, I like the version by Aretha Franklin and the one from Sister Act 2 (yes, I know that's sad).

lyrics include:

Oh, Happy Day
Oh, Happy Day
When Jesus washed my sins away.

Can't Give Up Now is much more modern, but it's one I like a lot. The YouTube Link goes to a group called Mary,Mary

I listened to "Can't Give Up Now" and liked it a lot. You're right: "Oh Happy Day" is a great song: I remember it playing on the radio when I was nine or ten.

Thank you for so many suggestions and links! You're wonderful, as always.

I finally talked him into letting me do the Nina Simone thing. And something by Amy Grant.

"Down By The Riverside" is my favorite gospel song (the one that goes "I'm gonna lay down my sword and shield, down by the river side, ain't gonna study war no more"). It's a bouncy upbeat song though, the kind of thing where people might feel moved to sing the chorus along with you, and I'm not sure if that's what you're aiming for.

Oh, hey, "Amazing Grace" would sound fantastic for your voice.

Actually, having people sing along with the chorus would have been fun! I liked this idea a lot, but ended up not using it because they're using karaoke tracks and I didn't know of a good version. It was a great suggestion, though!

Do Elvis' If The Lord Wasn't Walking By My Side, or Run On. They're great gospel, and the drag king stuff just follows when you're a woman doing Elvis songs.

Thanks! I listened to them (hadn't heard them before). I could hit the lowest note, sort of. (We're using karaoke tracks. There is a program that's supposed to be able to transpose a karaoke track. Wonder what that would do to the backup singers?) :-)

I ended up choosing something else. But thanks for the recs!

What about "Bless the Lord My Soul" from Godspell? -- Of course I guess it requires full chorus in the background... :-}

That would have worked! They're planning to use karaoke tracks, so the "choir" would have been available. I ended up picking an Amy Grant song, and he's going to let me do the Nina Simone after all. Thanks!

Amazing Grace is good for anyone who has a rich voice and can hold a pitch.

I have a soft spot for "River of Light" because it was sung in the Walkabout Clearwater Chorus.

I haven't found "River of Light" yet. I think I've settled on a couple of songs, but I'll continue to look for it.

I'm actually not crazy about "Amazing Grace". But that's just me.
