"Assault on the foundation of...." These statements always get me. I am completely baffled by them. The U.S. divorce rate is through the fucking roof...and yet people feel the need to "defend the foundations" "preserve the sanctity" and so on and so forth.
Newsflash to conservatives: Your precious heterosexual marriages end at a mind-boggling rate. Shouldn't you guys focus on cleaning up your own acts before shrieking about OMFG teh gays!!!!1111?
Second newsflash to conservatives: Britney Spears had a 55 hour marriage she apparently indulged in when drunk, then rapidly had annulled. You don't think her irresponsible prank marriage was an assault on the foundation of marriage, or attacked the sanctity of, or whatever line you're spouting this week? Oh yeah, wait, I forgot--she married a guy, and the focus has to be on OMFG teh gays!!!!!!1111.
Yeah, I think the ones who really believe it's an 'assault on the foundation of marriage' are deluding themselves. However, I do think they've hit on something real here: if we get the right to marry, it makes us much more acceptable-- and those who don't accept us much more marginal
