journey through a pumpkin patch

So far, October is off to a wonderful start! I spent this past Friday visiting ticklepenny in the central valley. It was a lovely time!

We went to Cool Patch Pumpkins, and went through the largest corn maze in the world.

Here are some pictures!

This was easily the largest pumpkin patch I had ever been to. They had a wide variety of beautiful pumpkins, large and small. It seems early to be buying pumpkins for Halloween, though it was tempting when they're displayed so alluringly.

Overlooking the corn maze. We headed in, undeterred by the stormy weather. We started out with some bravado, but quickly saw the necessity of a map. Even with a map, we were in there over two hours. It really is enormous.

She accidentally pulled out an entire stalk, hehe.

We were so relieved when we finally made it to the first checkpoint stand! But, looking out across the sea of corn, we still had a long way to go.

Following through mist and maze. . . (maize?). . .

The last leg of our journey! Going through the corn, which rose high above our head and obscured all vision but the path before us and the cloudy sky, it was easy to feel like we were in some mythical realm. Comparisons were made to feeling like we were in Labyrinth, or wandering towards Mordor as Frodo and Sam.
But for our true literary counterparts, I wonder if perhaps she is the Emma Woodhouse to my Harriet Smith. ticklepenny is so lovely and sophisticated; she has such refined tastes, and I'm very grateful when I get to share them with her. It makes me feel lucky to know her; and for now I am happy to be the simple, fond thing following her around until I am able to contribute more myself.

Anyway!

We finally made it! We emerge from the maze tired but victorious. Check out that map! It was indeed quite a trip!

Last year, after Halloween, Cool Patch Pumpkins hosted a giant pumpkin smash event. This Volkswagen bug was smashed by a 1,000-pound pumpkin during the event. According to the website, this year they are hoping for an even larger pumpkin smash.

Pumpkins and corn, as far as the eye can see.

After the pumpkin patch, we went to a beautiful community in Davis called Village Homes.  Built in the 1970s, it is full of communal gardens, flowers, fruit and nut trees, chicken coops, and wildlife.  There are no fences blocking off people's back yards, and the whole neighborhood is connected by winding pathways among the cottage-like houses.  It is exactly the sort of place I would love to live someday.

Like Persephone, stealing a pomegranate.

This cat was happy to see us.

Adding on to the already wonderful livability of Village Homes, many street names are references to Tolkien.  There is a map on the website that also lists places such as Rivendell Lane, Shire Lane, Elendil Lane, and Evenstar Lane.  I am definitely smitten with this place.

Morning glories have taken over this idyllic garden.

It was a truly nice day.  Thank you so much for sharing it with me, ticklepenny !  I felt it was a perfect beginning to this Autumn.
