Rock 'n' Roll, and Syd Barrett

Oct 26, 2008 03:37

I went to see Tom Stoppard's "Rock 'n' Roll" just before it closed at A.C.T. in San Francisco. It was a show about many things, one of them music. Like most plays by Tom Stoppard, it consisted mostly of people talking. It was not "action-packed" and no one broke out into song - yet it was one of the most moving three hours I've ever spent in a ( Read more... )

I don't think I've heard of that show before, but it sounds interesting. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I was going to go to the theatre with Nick to see Buddy, but I don't think that's happening now.

The Madcap Laughs is a great album; Nick and I have a tendency to sing songs from it whenever we have guitars and alcohol nearby. I think Nat would rather share a birthday with Roger Waters, but I imagine she's quite chuffed to share it with Syd; he was a cool dude.

I remember that Natalie prefers Roger Waters; maybe it's best not to share a birthday with your living heroes - in this way their birthday can be a special day on its own. More celebrations!

I know you share a birthday with Anton Chekhov, and Thomas Paine. Maybe there is an amazingly famous rock star with your birthday too that I don't know about yet? Or maybe you'll be the first!

I think you would have liked Rock 'n' Roll, but I'm not sure. Plenty of it took place in Cambridge, which definitely reminded me of you. There was a lot about politics and Sappho as well. I feel you would have liked the ending; it was mostly a good happy one.

I hope you do go get to see Buddy after all. Good luck!

By the way I had a dream about you last night where your height kept changing. You started out quite tall and then later I was carrying you around like a toddler, but you were still well-proportioned and all. By the end of the dream you were taller than me again. Hm!

Hmm, yeah, I always forget I share it with Chekhov. I always remember Tom Selleck and Oprah Winfrey.
You get Jane Austen, Beethoven and Arthur C. Clarke. Three creative geniuses! :D
Wait, and Benny from Abba is a genius too, don't forget that. Good ol' Benny.

Your dream sounds interesting :p
What do you think it means? Does it mean you are unsure if I'm adequately sized? :O
How tall would you make me, if you could choose, Kit?

Ah, thanks very much for posting this! I heard about Rock'n'Roll when it first opened, Roger Waters and David Gilmour both went to see it and spoke about how much they liked it in inverviews. If I remember rightly, Roger said he liked it because it contains three of his favourite things - Syd, Cambridge, and Communism.

Would you mind if I posted this on the Pink Floyd forum that I moderate on? It's at www.pinkfloydz.com.

Hmmm, well I do slightly prefer Roger to Syd, but it's a very close call! Roger's birthday is in September, which would have its advantages when it comes to decent weather and birthday parties.

Yes, please feel free to post it on your forum. I posted it originally hoping you would be interested, mostly!

I thought the play was quite good, and I'm pleased to know I am with Roger Waters about this. I don't know if it's still playing in London; apparently, according to this wikipedia article, Mick Jagger "... along with his production company Jagged Films, 'approached' Stoppard 'for the movie rights' to the play Rock 'n' Roll." I'm not sure if this was a joke or not. Either way, I hope you get to see it. :)
