Game Rant: The song in the stars (Hoshiuta)

Story quality can be the deal breaker when it comes to how eroge are received by some fans. At times, art style and extra features may give certain games additional ways to appeal to the player, but can never make up for a deficient story line. Such games can be damaging when it comes to the company that produces them, and while certain players ( Read more... )

It's a shame the writing is lacking, seeing as the art is pretty nice.

I'll admit that the stories had potential, but the overall lack of drive and any real conflict really hurt the way each tale turned out. A lot of it failed to be convincing (Kurara's route), terribly overdone (Yui's route), well-conceived but poorly executed (Midori & Nanano's routes) or just downright terrible (Renge's route).

They're going to release a fandisk "Hoshiuta - Starlight Serenade", but still no release date announced.
They better fix things with this one. D:

Didn't know about that, so I'll have to keep my eyes open. The only real thing to fix would be Renge's lack of a real route. Some of the background characters (like Koume and maybe Houjou Arisa) could have routes of their own, I guess, but everything else is already finished. A major rewrite for the other routes would be nice, though.

Which route of Sora Uta turned out to be canon? anonymous March 8 2010, 17:23:52 UTC
You mentioned that Mio's book from Sora Uta is published in Hoshi Uta's timeline. Does that mean that Mana or Mio's route is considered the story that the creators considered to have actually happened?

It's too bad that Renge gets hit with the worst story. Her design was something I liked--too bad that a "good character design" is absolutely no guarantee that the character's story will turn out to be good. The music and art were wasted on the bad story. Still, I'd like to see you post some video for Renge's and Kurara's routes.

Let's hope that good writing in games gets more valued in the future.

There's no real "timeline" per se. Hoshiuta made refences to several other front wing games, including Sorauta (Mio and Mana's story book at the beginning of Kurara's route) and Boy Meets Girl (when Yui wants to form a club, Kazuhiko tells her to not give it a weird name like "Magical Club". Yui claims no such thing exists, but Kazuhiko mentions in passing that he knows of a school that has a Magical Club).

They also took some stuff from what was happening to the global economy at the time (not that much has changed now), since Kazuhiko complains that the reason few tourists come to Mihoshi-cho seems to be more because of rising gas prices and the bad economy.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Yamaguchi Noboru will try to redeem himself (if at all). It's really the bad writing that holds the game back. I still would like an explanation for Renge's route.
