Game Rant: See-saw love~ (Sakura Sakura)

Despite common expectations, eroge in their entirety rarely fall into the love triangle genre. While one could argue that having multiple female "leads" in a story is enough for it to qualify, the story structure more often than not keeps the heroines and their respective situations/stories separate from one another. The result is a more character- ( Read more... )

Rider A: I knew I forgot something... moroboshiyuumei May 12 2010, 06:15:53 UTC
I came to the realization that I forgot two-and-a-half somewhat important characters from this game. As such, I'll talk a bit about them here in order to keep the flow of my review intact.

Ah, thanks for the addition of the male protagonists. It helps put things in perspective with the female characters' motivations and actions.

I was kind of torn on that one. I felt that I might be spoiling too much, but at the same time I felt a section on the protagonists was necessary. Not everyday that the protagonist are something other than your average eroge protagonist that is ridiculously maleable with little to no character traits of their own...outside of gimmick elements, of course.

Love Triangles again? anonymous May 17 2010, 00:44:34 UTC
Wasn't Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien one of the most famous love-triangle type stories in recent eroge history?

One of the earlier examples of an eroge love triangle I remember was Cocktail Soft's "With You ~ Mistume Teitai," illustrated by released way back in 1998. The art was good enough for me to get an artbook for the game--pity I can't read it. They even made a two-episode OVA for it that for the life of me I can't track down.

Despite how some fans claim that they hate love triangle stories because it can turn into such a divisive issue for the fandom and sprout "shipping wars," the fact that people can get so riled up about it shows that it can be a good way for eroge companies to get people talking about their games. Of course, it's best used in moderation.

KimiNozo used a love triangle as a major device in the story, but the eroge version of the game still separated the heroines once you got past the prologue/high school part of the story (admitedly, there were sections where certain heroines crossed paths). While it was still up to Narumi Takayuki to decide which of them he wanted to be with, the game's use of guilt over Haruka pretty much told me that Mitsuki was the true heroine of the game (the fact that Akane Maniax treats Mitsuki's ending as the canon ending only reinforces this). And it wasn't like Takayuki was "playing" them both the way Tohru does with Sakura and Nanako. Admitedly, one is basically a drama turned into an eroge/anime while the other is a comedy-centered eroge. That's kind of why I compared Sakura Sakura more to old school anime like Kimagure Orange Road (only without the psychic powers that conveniently misfire ( ... )
