Game Rant: Making more than just a game (Eroge-!)

Jul 26, 2010 18:17

Yaruge and I almost never cross paths, and the few times we have came to be due to either my curiosity getting the better of me, or sheer dumb luck. As such, I can say I'm not too experienced with the type of content within them. While I guess there is a certain way one can appreciate the constant use of sex and risque language, these type of games ( Read more... )

This whole game just kinda creeps me out. I thought it was because of the excessively jailbaity-looking characters, but just the review on the whole makes me think I'd have some problems with this game. And I'm amazed that an adult game can touch on fetishes that surprise even you (and masochistically curious what such unexpected fetishes could be)! I still have not-so-fond memories of the Bondage Game viewing at Neko, haha.

Well, while not going into specifics (unless directly asked), Iori and (obviously) Miki gave me several "what has been seen cannot be unseen" moments. I'll admit that all four routes have one point (several, in the case of Iori) where I've had to turn away. Momoka's route is relatively tame (despite certain sticking of objects in orifices they don't belong), followed by Kisara, then Nene, with Iori winning the "prepare the eye-bleach" award.

Funny you should mention the bondage game viewing, because that sprung to mind as I was playing thought this one.

While you're squicked by whatever kinks the heroines have, I'm more curious than anything. After going through Black Cyc eroge, I don't think there's much that can sicken me. And completely off topic but Miki is so adorable~

The heroines aren't the issue, per se (except Iori). It's the protagonist. Sure, on occasion the heroine in question will come up with something on their own (the body paint event, the ダブルバイブラブラブデート thing), but spoiler the protagonist has this thing for slipping stuff into the girls' food just to watch them shit themselves out in the street. He does this to Kisara and Nene.

Off the top of my head, I think I've seen scat play, water sports, loli sex (guess who that involves), body paint, hardcore S&M, bondage, rape, lactating breasts, putting-dog-ears-on-a-girl-and-making-her-walk-on-all-fours-in-the-middle-of-the-park-while-wearing-nothing-else, using-semen-as-a-food-condiment, "trap" sex (Miki), and what I call "unwashed sex" simply because I have no other term to use for it. Not much on their own, but when crammed into one game ( ... )

Congrats, you've scarred me for life. The protag drugs their food just to indulge in his scat fetish?! DDD:

These fetishes sound surprisingly dark, especially the semen-as-a-condiment, which I've only seen once before in Mugen Kairo. But thanks for satisfying my curosity, in any case.

He only does it once per girl. Once is enough, in my book.

Despite having such fetishes, the game still manages to come out somewhat light-hearted, so it has that going to itself. *nod*

It's an interesting concept, but I think the lackluster performance combined with the 'ewwwww' factor is going to keep me away from this one =P

I was hoping something like this would be a doujin eroge version of Comic Party. After all, how many people want to be the next Type-Moon or Leaf? Or to be the next Nasu?

To me this seems to be a scattershot attempt at nabbing as many fans of as many different fetishes as possible. Neither is the art much good. Too bad, huh?

While that idea has merit to it, it'd be really difficult to try to mimick comic party. ComiPa was the first of its kind, and did things in a way that up until then had not been done before. This would be the second eroge about eroge, with very few references to the fandom tossed in (admitedly, there is more focus on the actual industry in Eroge-!).

As much as my comparison gets ignored, Rakuen worked because while it was built around a similar premise, it was much more about the people involved in making the game. The staffers were also not completely ignorant about their subject matter (comparing Himeno Kisara to Mishiba Karen is like comparing a mouse to a lion). To top it off, instead of being portrayed as super-perverted people, the Rakuen cast was portrayed as ordinary (if quirky) people that happened to be in the business of making eroge. That's a huge difference in story potential.

I'm not asking for a 1:1 copy, but at least some depth and some character development would have done wonders for Eroge-!. While Nene and Iori ( ... )

Hmm, I still think a game about making doujin eroge in the style of Comipa could work.

By the way, did the ComiPa characters who were actual artists ever actually reveal if they had any ero-content in their doujins? It'd be a rather interesting bit if Kazuhiko poked into Aya's dumpbox and found some "compromising smut." Then again, unassuming fans drawing or writing strange stuff in their closet is nothing new to the world of doujinshi (let alone professional fiction writers). It could be an interesting segue into an "eroge production version" of ComiPa, such as if Kazuhiko decided to recruit one of the artist characters to become a doujin eroge CG artist.

Well, there is also one other thing to keep in mind: doujinshi production requires relatively few people. Kazuki and Taishi could get away with Brother2 because Kazuki did all the artwork and writing for his doujinshi while Taishi handled registration stuff and such (he wasn't even necessary once Kazuki figured out how to get his stuff printed on his own). That's why ComiPa could afford to have multiple doujinshi circles in the game.

By comparison, Rakuen required a bigger cast of characters because of all the roles within each group. Moonearth had Boku (character designer), Mishiba Karen (CG artist), Kantoku (Director), Ann (project manager), Marqui du Pasta Sauce (programmer), and Chikura Sae (scenario writer). This is not including the guy from Studio Jupiter, who was in charge of sound editing and music composition, nor does it include any "regular" voice actresses. Most of the cast was connected to Moonearth in some way.
