Contrast to Cornelius - Japanese version of Beck, if that helps - Gabb'ing it up on Yo Gabba Gabba.

goodness gracious, what the fuck?

what surprised me most about live music on a kid's show was how little it's changed. it's a little slicker for YGG, but the basic techniques (pan, zoom, cut, graphics) are all there in 1973. perhaps the only thing that's changed is the time and cost to produce it.

I wish I was having as much fun as the kid in the red shirt.

I'm not surprised. I'm sure it's not just kid shows. Any live music video recordings suffer from the same problem - static humans making small, repetitive gestures. You can do lots of cutaways or camera angles/change-ups, or you're oscillating between the performers and some non-static video or animation. Or you go the 80's music video route, and don't show performers actually performing.

Hardly static, but ever see an opera in person? Compare that to televised PBS broadcasts. It's a very different experience. In many ways, I enjoy televised versions more. Actually, there was a recent NYT article sorta talking about this:

I'm shooting a cooking show now -- the plan is to put a few eps on youtube and see where it goes. after one shoot, I realized cooking is a live event. there are some things you can reshoot, but once the knives and heat come out, you can't stop. (there might be a novelty song in that prev sentence.)

so your mention about 80's vid route is all of a sudden interesting. I don't think I've seen a cooking show like that, but now I want to make it.

haven't seen an opera, but I dig what you're saying about live music in general.
