Personality: Tobias is both a hawk, and an adolescent boy who has seen war. Not, perhaps, war in the traditional sense-but war nonetheless. He has seen his planet through an attempted conquest and the destruction of the invading empire responsible for such. He has seen horror; of a race of sluglike parasites who utterly and entirely control the mind of the host. Aliens who saw violent slaughter as entertainment, simply because they knew no better. A peaceful, herbivorous species-turned into horrifying slave-soldiers.
He has been shot, stabbed, burned, drowned, tortured, maimed; his mind torn apart and thrown back together again. He has known grief. He has known what it is to fly; to ride the wind and updrafts into the sky. He knows the mind of the hawk; the ruthless nature inherent to its psyche. That the hawk must kill to survive. That the human does not-but often must. He has known kindness, friendship, camaraderie and love. He helped save the world.
Tobias--is not a normal boy, by any stretch of the imagination. He feels…old. Perhaps by hawk standards, he is.
He has come a long way since the insecure kid pushed around by bullies intent on washing his hair in the toilet, but a few little scraps of his old self remain. Though he is kind and rather benevolent at heart, he often finds himself torn between his human nature and that of the hawk whose head he lives in. He has forgotten or simply discarded many human things-how to make facial expressions, for example. Often, he finds himself longing for things he once took for granted-going to school, not having to kill for his meals. But he hasn’t forgotten his healthy sense of humor, however morbid and sardonic it’s become-or his friends, or his family.
The events at the end of the war, however, have left him inclined to be depressed and stoic. Though time has made loss easier to bear, Rachel’s death has left an indelible mark on his psyche that cannot be erased.
What your character can offer: Tobias is a hawk nothlit--with all the advantages of disadvantages of being such. While his body is trapped in that of a red-tailed hawk and is quite capable of flight, his mind is still very human. He is capable of “thoughtspeech”, which a verbal-only telepathic message that can be broadcast to one or as many people as he wishes, though while chipped the range of this speech is only as far as a normal voice would carry. It does not work through the communicators, for instance, unless someone is near enough to be yelled at in person-which would kind of defeat the purpose. Unchipped, his thoughtspeech will reach through the network.
Tobias is also in possession of several different DNA types, swimming around in his blood; ranging from a lowly housefly to an African elephant to two giant goddamn whales and four species of alien. And more.
And! He’s equipped to acquire more, too; any genetically distinct organism will do, even other humans. He must be in his original form to acquire any new DNA sequences-which in this case, means his hawk form. Which, similarly, can make things a bit awkward.
When a creature is acquired, it enters a brief, calming trance-most of the time. Once its DNA is floating around in his bloodstream, Tobias can morph into perfect, uninjured copy of it through cascading cellular regeneration (alien technology, leave it at that). The instincts of the morph usually take some getting used to the first time around-and any injuries sustained while in a morph can be healed, so long as they are not immediately fatal and Tobias retains consciousness. When he morphs into the injured creature again, it will be as if it never happened-DNA doesn’t record evisceration.
What items will they be bringing with them? Nothing, he's a bird.
