In my experience, "like a date" means that it is, in fact, a date, but the person speaking is awkward. They put the "like" in front so that if you say no, they have an out (well, it wasn't a real date) or if you say yes, they can be all happy about it (i have a date!).

Also, people just over use the word like. So maybe it was just a pointless word.
