Hey, folks! While I am moderately familiar with Western steampunk fiction and its traditions and genre conventions in both literature and video games, I am in need of aid regarding steampunk anime and manga ( Read more... )

Add Wild ARMS 2&3 to that list as well, though you don't need to add 4 or 5. Those two, while good games, are not all that Western steampunk feeling.

There is a manga by the name of Gun Blaze West written by the guy who wrote Rurouni Kenshin that I think has the setting you are looking for, with the bonus of being professionally translated into English if you can find it.

I know 3 fairly well and have read an LP of 2.

Sadly, 2 is not rreally helpful to me. It also is not particularly steampunk-feeling.

Also, I should note - I'm looking for general steampunk, not just steampunk Westerns.

(When I say I understand Western steampunk literature and stuff, I mean 'steampunk literature of the West', rather than 'cowboys'.)

Additions: Give Steam Detectives a try. Kind of streamlined art, but it takes place in a city powered by steam. It also has large (not giant) steam-powered robots.

Another suggestion, if you can find it (and get it to work) is Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura for the PC. Fantasy meets Steampunk in a Baldur's Gate/Planescape: Torment-style RPG. It is somewhat old (2001), and buggy on top of that, though.

Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends (Also on the PC) may be both easier find and make work. One of the factions is pretty much steampunk. The other two are Arabian magic and Mayan magic flavored.

Speaking of factions, if you can find artwork (or want to put money down on the minis) for MageKnight: Rebellion, the Black Powder Rebellion is steampunk with dwarves.

Editted for glaring grammar error.
Edit the Second: It's Black Powder Rebellion, not Revolution.

I've played both games a lot, actually. I will look into Steam Detectives!

And yeah, I highly recommend finding art for the Black Powder Rebellion if you can. All the steam-powered golems you could ever want.

Dunno if you are still looking for steampunk stuff, but in the game inFamous on the PS3, the First Sons mooks definitely have a bit of that vibe to their design.
