He has a Ph.D in theology and teaches at our local Catholic college; he is an incredibly attractive figure (yes, gfrancie, that way, too) and an very popular campus minister. He ( Read more... )

Very interesting! So glad you sent this my way. There is a lot that is exciting going on in China musically -- and they have come a long, long way. It's not just a matter of being a developing nation. One of the finalists in that amazing 1981 Cliburn competition I write so much about (wink!) was a guy who was persecuted in the Cultural Revolution, but practiced in prison on a table. Now that is incredible. But I do believe in a way what Stanislav Ioudenitch said, that sometimes people who face challeges have different kind of opportunity that others of us who "have it easy" don't get, which is that which comes from the incredible dedication and quality need to overcome adversity and the necessity of doing it your own way, because there's no other way to go. I do think there is a lot of love at a personal level for the Pope among young people -- whether that has translated into greater devotion to the Church, well, I guess I agree with you that I'm a little less optimistic there. I keep reminding myself of the glacial pace at which the Church makes progress -- not necessarily in the teachings themselves so much as in revealing their true meaning and value. And the fact that there will be a new Pope. The role of one Pope in one moment may be one thing; the role of another Pope in another may be something else. But they may complement each other. Perhaps the next Pope will exude something in those areas that this Pope didn't and be the link that pulls people together. While not saying anything against this Pope, there are "next steps" to take, and I must say I do look forward to who and how they will be made.
