I have been reading George Weigel’s biography of Pope John Paul II, and I wanted to take some time to share a reflection I may develop more later that resulted from my inevitable “skipping ahead” (wink

You know, my flist is pretty much overloaded with people who are politically and ideologically on my end of the spectrum. And that's fine, you know? I think most people prefer to associate for the most part with like-minded individuals.
However, I had long been searching for someone whom I could read on a regular basis who is *truly* a (pardon the term, but... ;-)) compassionate Conservative. You are amazing. I so admire your ability to tie together all sorts of thought streams-- current events, religious thought, historical information, popular culture, your own experiences, etc.-- and present them in such a way that a person like myself often says, "Wow... I never thought of it like *this* before..." And all without ever feeling attacked or condescended-to.

Well, right back to you -- it does make life easier that way, and life's hard enough as it is. Having said that, I am glad it is possible to have a healthy diversity, for myself as much as anyone. I have to tell you, I actually worry about what the composition of my own friends list says about me and the world. I have always had more friends at the "other end" of the spectrum. This is the first time where the balance has been the other way. There are comforts in it, but it does raise the question of whether we are to the point where people can't talk to each other. I'm glad you and any number of others are here! I only wish I was better at commenting, etc. more.
That looks good. I'm tempted to put that on interlibrary loan (I'm "trying," "failing," whatever to save money). I think a lot about what I would do in those situations. I feel certain I would crumble, and it bothers me very much.
The story goes (some of these saints' biographies do get a little "tidied up" I think) that when the Nazi soldiers found him still alive more than two weeks later, they said, "There's a man." I just don't know what I would do in such a situation; the older I get, the more in awe I am, because I don't know if I could even survive one percent of what those folks went through.
I have always been touched by the story of the priest who gave up his life for the husband and father. Its one of those stories, that remain with you forever, and demonstrates someone living Christs' teachings. Thank you for giving me his name.
