Muslim leaders' response to the cartoon violence

Feb 05, 2006 14:21

I'm keeping a list of Muslim leaders -- religious and political -- who are condemning violence or otherwise urging restraint in average citizens' response to the cartoon incident. Let's not leap to conclusions that "moderate Islam" or "Muslim leaders" do not speak in favor of curbing violence.

This post will be continually edited.

I think you should either unlock this post or make this list available publicly elsewhere. This is interesting stuff.

Maybe I'll unlock. I have a bad troll after me, but he may not watch carefully since so many things are locked . . .

This helps reassure my faith that there is a degree of moderation out there.

An excellent list and resource. I'm tagging it for memories.

The more I look at this, think about some reading (including that which we did on Chechnya -- the Saudi quote up there is very carefully drawn, did you not think? Chechens seem ready to use this situation for violence, and of course, we now know who influences them) I did and that you and I did together that I have to say this: regardless of what blanket statements can be made about Muslims throughout the world, they, what drives them, what they view as "acceptable or not" is so complex, that if we are ever to understand, we have homework to do. I'm really not arguing that just because they think something is acceptable, it is, but it would be nice to start to get more than the most limited sense of their thinking, and from what I've been reading on LJ the past few days, I don't really think any of us have much more than that.

You may find the article by Lorenzo Vidino, "Creating Outrage," in today's NRO of interest. http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/vidino200602060735.asp

I was wondering why, if the cartoons were published in September, that the fury is happening in February. This article addresses that.

I think my understanding had been that the diplomacy had been better faith than that, but be that as it may, I think my irritation with the European newspapers on this remains, and perhaps we have to separate Danish newspapers from other newspapers. The Danish newspapers may not even have screwed up -- they either got set up or into something they could not even have contemplated. On the other hand, every newspaper in Europe republishing the cartoons was almost a diplomatic act from the perspective of a lot of people in the Middle East where the press does nothing unless permitted by the government. My point is: why do that? Why let these guys work you over?

Now, one of the things we have been discussing on europeanunion is that the mere fact that you can criticize the newspapers and be furious at "your own" does not make the response excusable. Two wrongs don't make a right. But that works both ways. Just because radical Muslims decide to make a mountain out of a molehill doesn't mean that if you should reasonably have known that would ( ... )

Interesting, and I thank you.

I'm wondering when anyone in the UAE is going to go on record.

I got the impression there were some statements out of the Gulf states, and then I could not find them when I came to write this up. Do we know if there are any violent demonstrations there -- well, there wouldn't be, I suspect, but still.

I might have just learned that they've taken Lego products off the shelves in protest, but I'll need to check the papers and see if I can find that out for certain.
