Buffy #33 - summary and thinky thoughts

"There's a reason I loved you the moment I saw you. There's a reason we can't be happy with anyone else. And there's a reason your whole body is glowing right now. And there's a reason that despite all the power coursing through me, what I feel right now is weak. I'm terrified you'll go. You'll leave before we have a chance to explore what this ( Read more... )

Penguins. That's the only answer that makes sense.

(Sorry, I just can't talk about this anymore. It makes my head hurt, and also kinda squicks me.)

OMG you're serious? That's what season 8 is about?
Man, I'm so glad that I never gave in and started to buy the comics.
I'm a huge Buffy and Spike fan and would probably be banging my head against the wall by now.

I realize you have to keep things interesting for new fans and change stuff but you can do it in a good way like James Bond or Star Trek or you head to a similiar disaster like Dragonball Evolution.

Lucky you!

*le sigh*

What can I say. I'm weak. Weak and curious.

Heh. Tell it to fans who wrote anti-Craig petitions or anti-Abrams diatribes. :)

I'm afraid my biggest problem with the comics is that I take them too seriously. :)

Believe me I'm weak as well, curiosity doesn't kill cats but me, I was very VERY tempted but lucky me, I can't read comics if I don't like the artwork and just one look at the preview pictures and I knew I couldn't do it. I'm very picky.

Sure some die-hard trekkies and Bond Fans might still hate the new films but seriously as long as you can get enough new fans interested who cares, success matters. You're only in trouble if fans AND the new audience hate the result see Dragonball Evolution as the prime example of changing the wrong things.

I know most Buffy fans will not be too happy with the whole new story plot but I somehow doubt that they can manage to win new fans with this crazy Twilight stuff either.

This is the paradigm that is currently killing American daytime. They made a decision a little over a decade and a half ago to make their mission to youthen the demographics. And in seeking new fans, they actively, knowingly alienated the old ones, until now the number of shows is down by half and those that are still still clinging to life have far less than half the ratings they did a decade ago.

As my boyfriend put it it's also a lot like Sailor Moon and tuxedo mask *shakes head*

I'll give Joss the benefit of the doubt that he'll turn this around. If I had not read all the Q&As (fell off the wagon) the subversion would be clear as day to me, and so far my initial impression was usually the right one.

About Spuffy, if Spike shows up to fight all tha destiny crap, I'd probably be pretty awed, but somehow I'm reluctant to be optimistic.

Anyway, great review!

I'm not in the loop, but, apparently, every fandom has its own meltdowns. :)

You know what's interesting? I've got my first impression of that scene through transcripts on Buffyforums. And the scene sounded the way the Bangel scene on The Zeppo sounds - very over the top.

Then I read forum posts where people took everything at face value and thought that Buffy and Angel act that way because they're soulmates.

Then I read the actual issue and had the same impression - it's too fanfic-y to be serious.

Then I read Q&As and found out that we're supposed to take everything seriously.

*shrugs*

It's totally Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask... small blonde girl with superpowers is destined to be with a mysterious protector who is a foot taller than her and has a tendency to go evil. I challenge anyone to watch S1 Sailor Moon and S2 Buffy and not see the similarities.

What I love about Buffy is that Angel wasn't her protector4 it was usually her who was saving him (and, later, Spike). But in issue #33 Angel act as a protector who know better what's good for Buffy. And she follows him obediently.

I'm withholding judgment, too (although I am plenty worried and WTF about the developments!) because, like you said, it's only the second installment of a 4-part arc. So, TV-wise, we're hitting the half-hour mark, the second act break, where cops generally arrest the wrong guy, doctors make potentially disastrous mistakes and things are just generally not what they seem. Also, usually the most eye-popping thing you can think of is happening right now. The series' most controversial scene so far (I think everyone can guess which one)? Split in half by the second act break, oh yeah.

This ain't over :)

Also, I am thinking of friending you. Are you okay with that development? ;)

I don't know what to say! In his latest Q&A Scott said that even if Buffy knew what's to come she would join Twangel 'cause it's all about sentiment. For me that contrived, destiny driven love, nothing you could do or choose about.

I want to point to you this comment http://liz-marcs.livejournal.com/467650.html?thread=7584450#t7584450

" A woman falling into the arms of her first crush is a favored trope by Joss. There are old-school X-Men and Kitty Pryde fans who to this day are pissed he basically magically hand-waved all of Kitty Pryde's character development in the Marvel universe to re-hook her up with Petyr, someone she dated when she was 15.

Oh, and then he basically killed Kitty by making her fuse with an armed alien missile and sending both off into deep space never to be heard from again.

But, bah! And yeah. This whole deal where Buffy comes across as less mature than she did in Season 1 is getting very old."

And we have Meltzer http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=25093

"So, with the next cover being an homage to that old Carmine Infantino Superman cover, I'm assuming next up is our romance issue?

Meltzer Of course. That's exactly what we're doing. I promise you that when you see all four issues, they will stand so separate from each other that the breadth of the emotional journeys these characters get to go on is spectacular. It's the best part of the whole thing. Again, I get to show you the payoff that Joss and company earned by setting all this up over seven seasons."

The romance waited for 7 seasons - of BtVS of course - there's no mention of AtS 5 seasons

I guess it was a lose-lose situation. If they took AtS character development into consideration, then the whole plot would have crumbled. The s8 arc demanded a lot of suspension of disbelief from the very beginning, they couldn't afford to add anything from AtS into that mix.

Yes, it looks like Buffy and Angel specialness is the crucial element of of the new mythology.
*shrugs* We'll see.
