I also read a book because of Buffy's 'ascension'. I read Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clark. Someone on my flist brought it up as a book that dealt with the fate of humanity when it is 'saved' by a superior race. :)

"Childhood's End" is a fascinating book. I don't know if Joss could surpass it. But, apparently, he didn't intend to go there. Buffy turning into a Goddess was a one-issue joke.
