This is my very belated post of summer fanfiction recommendations. I would do it earlier, but all the heated debates about issue #36 distracted me for a while... So, without much preamble:

Powerful, gripping tale of struggle and sacrifice and beautiful hymn to unconditional love. Angearia uses all the colors of her writing palette - angst, humor, action; her expressive language makes banal words sound like they're said for the first time. Multiple awards winner, the story is definitely a keeper.

What if Buffy's slayer potential has been discovered by The Watchers Council in due time? What if she'd been sent to The Watchers Academy where the potential slayers get education and training? What if The Council had caught the members of The Fang Four and kept them as prisoners and sparring partners for future slayers?
There definitely are some elements of Hogwarts template in the set-up, but the story itself is fresh and original. This unique AU-verse is based on the premise that in the middle of XX century The Watcher Council and The Initiative joined forces, and one of the consequences was the modernization of the Slayer system. Complex, inventive plotting, spot-on voices, fast-moving narrative, paradoxical morality and fascinating choices characters face make "Rose" a must-read.

Echoing famous thriller "The Trouble with Harry" by Alfred Hitchcock, author weaves a complex plot, putting our intrepid heroes right in the middle of a twisted intrigue. The story is funny, fast-moving, it features a lot of great lines and it highlights the idea that Buffy is a smart girl who doesn't realize it.

One day he overdoses laudanum and sees a beautiful girl in his garden. Her clothes are unusual; her behavior is weird; her name is Buffy Summers. William is sure that she's just a figment of his imagination so he's relaxed and comfortable around her... Intriguing premise (the author assures that it's not an AU and all the BtVS events have happened), expertly written William's POV and great details of the Victorian age make this story a total winner. (I've already have a theory what has happened and why William hasn't been turned... )

Transporting Buffy back into punk era with Spike as her guide and companion is an inspired idea; tight, clever plotting and great character voices make this story a must.

Grief pushes Buffy and Xander to do something really stupid: they have consolation sex, Buffy ends up pregnant and eventually gives birth to a girl. Things get more complicated when she discovers that Spike is no longer dead. Earnest, detailed exploration of Buffy's dilemmas in season 8.

But Spike finds himself unable to feed on him; he's a monster but not that kind of monster! Buffy catches him when he's carrying the baby to the police station, and her attitute to Spike start to change... The idea of Spike and Buffy as allies in season 2 works surprisingly well, given that by that time Buffy wasn't as jaded and disillusioned as in canonical season 6.

There definitely are some elements of Hogwarts template in the set-up, but the story itself is fresh and original. This unique AU-verse is based on the premise that in the middle of XX century The Watcher Council and The Initiative joined forces, and one of the consequences was the modernization of the Slayer system. Complex, inventive plotting, spot-on voices, fast-moving narrative, paradoxical morality and fascinating choices characters face make "Rose" a must-read.
