You can have peace. Or you can have freedom. Don't ever count on having both at once.
I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.
I took these quotes from someone more wise than I am, but who has the same views upon being free as I do. These come from Robert Heinlein, a brilliant author, and a naval officer.
I agree completely with thewarriorpoet, however since you wanted multiple responses I can go a little further. There are two definitions of freedom, there is the political version of freedom; that is democracy, or the idea that the citizens of a state have power in their government and are trusted to make decisions regarding their governmental system. (this is something I see us losing quickly).
Freedom as in the romanticized ideal is a complete lack of attachment to all things wordly. This includes other people. I don't think it's possible to be completely free. We, as humans have urges and needs which drive us, and that drive rules us, thus we cannot be free. All material things brought by modern society and greed put aside we still need to eat, drink, and procreate. The human curse is we spend our whole lives craving freedom and in the process bind ourselves more.
