Filking and Prejudice

I thought, from reading stuff on the web, that the anti-filking sentiments were somewhat over -- filking is accepted as a respectable aspect of fandom. My first face-to-face meeting with such anti-filking sentiment in fandom was in the Starbase 972 bonefire, where (despite scheduling it in advance in the planning), people tried to shout us down ( Read more... )

Technically what happened upstairs above us was an award ceremony for best short story in Hebrew, run by the Einat Peleg Foundation. As Einat's only been dead a couple of years, and this was the first such award given, it was a slightly more solemn occasion than planned, and they did have some justification for asking us to leave.

I did, however, give the asker a royal chewing out for his choice in where, when and how to interrupt us.

I specifically remember the asker referred to it as a "memorial service", playing on our guilt feelings. So apparently, not only was he rude as all hells, he was also dishonest.

Like I said, it was supposed to be an award ceremony, and then the family also turned it into a memorial service. It was less than fully planned, and caused much confusion, some of which washed over to us. He was telling the truth as he knew it at the time. Let it go, and next time we'll check the program before we make with the music under a balcony.

I would hope that in Israel -- of all places -- the awesome power of righteous and undeterred Jews would not be underestimated! ;-)
