What makes rory a "super student", as opposed to just being a normal person who happens to be very good at school because she's talented and hard working?

Also, why are lawyer show a different genre than doctor shows? aren't both just ensemble dramas with a setting (hospital/law firm/police precinct/fire squad/spaceship) that serves the purpose of bringing the characters into contact with new people and deal with new aspects of society?
