I stick with Penny Arcade's analysis.

I don't like the Kindle. It's tough to read outside in bright sunshine, much like the old school GameBoy, and when I drop my paperback I don't have to worry about being out almost 400 bones with tax.

I'm not a fan of the Kindle either. Too hard to loan friends your books. Everything is locked down. Like music during the bad days of digital music.

I expect in the not too distant future that there will be much more practical readers built into the more advanced phones. So it isn't an extra 400 bucks, and since it's your phone you've got it on you all the time anyway. Can carry all your books with you everywhere you go, and it's lighter than a small paperback. Regardless it isn't either/or. It's just a different way to enjoy the written word.

When was the last time you looked at a Kindle? "Kindle, like its competitor the Sony Reader, is actually quite easy to read outdoors because it's not backlit." http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=92079896
Actually I don't think it has anything to do with being backlit and a lot more to do with the screen technology.
