stop the violence

Glee’s back, y’all. I’ve watched it three times already, in just one week. Obsessed, you say? Pffft. No. (Ok, but really. I honestly didn’t think I enjoyed it that much, but apparently I was wrong). Anyway, I now have thoughts to share. The most important of which is:

I was beyond tickled at how baffled Sue was at that remark. She’s usually the one making non-sensical comments, who is this woman? The mother fuckin BEISTE, that’s who. Great new character, I think she was probably my favorite among those we were introduced to this week. Funny, but with emotional depth too. All I wanted to do was give her a hug. Normally, I am all for Sue’s shenanigans (BUTTFACE MCBALLNUTS. ASSBRAHAM LINCOLON. BOOBS MCGEE. JUICY. VINE RIPENED. CHEST FRUIT), but what she and Will were doing to Beiste was just plain ol’ mean, and I didn’t much care for it. There’s a difference between hilariously offensive (I’m looking at you, Rachel) and cruelty (Will’s entire existence. I mean, what?)

Apart from that though, the episode was pretty much a win with me. I actually genuinely liked Finn in this one, which y’know. Is quite rare. I think this could be attributed to how minimal the Finn/Rachel schmoopiness was. When we did get to see them as a couple, Finn was surprisingly enough, not a grade-A douche. Instead, he was sweet but firm, and told Rachel exactly what needed to be said. Plus, you know. Finn/Artie friendship, ftw! I loved how front and center the bromances were this week. I think that may be why “Billionaire” ended up being my favorite performance of the episode. Not only was Sam’s voice absolutely lovely, but all the guys were just very clearly in their element, and having a blast at that. Finn on drums, Puck with his guitar, Mike Chang popping and locking like there’s no tomorrow. And, Artie’s rapping was a great sight better than on “Empire State of Mind”.

That number was…yeeesh. Just as horrible as I was anticipating. My roommate and I were shocked to discover that Puck managed to pull off Jay-Z better than the rest of them, but truth be told, that’s not really saying much. They need to cut this shit out. I will admit though, the dancing throughout the performance was at least ten kinds of adorable. Actual choreography! Pucky D ad Finny D making a comeback! Mercedes killing it on the chorus! Seriously, those kind of moments never get old for me, these guys are just way too cute. And ngl, I totally squee’d a little when Quinn and Santana were leaning into each other at the end. While that was admittedly more the actresses than the characters, I just want to say, I find their dynamic fascinating. I would love love LOVE it if the show were to explore it more.

Speaking of, that catfight between them was probably the best scene in the entire episode (well, for me). I loved how both Naya & Dianna approached it, so very well done imo. What I found most interesting here was how, despite the fact that Santana threw down like it was her goddamn job, despite the fact that she can very clearly kick Quinn’s ass in a fight, despite the fact that she obviously has some serious pent up rage regarding that girl, despite everything…she still does as she’s told. Quinn tells her to tighten up that ponytail before class (the “you sloppy ass bitch!” was sadly, only implied), and Santana listens. No pausing, no hesitation, nothing but immediate compliance. Fantastic.

Also? Might I add that, while Dianna Agron doesn’t usually do sexy when she’s herself (I’m sorry, but super-fucking-cute is the girl’s default setting, and she almost never breaks away from that), she’s pretty damn hot as cheerio!Quinn. And god, do I ever love the hints of vulnerability she brings to the character. I know this an unpopular fandom opinion, but I genuinely believe Di is a better actress than most people give her credit for. And it’s not just because I love her more than is probably healthy. There’s this moment during “What I Did for Love” (afhdksahfnkdsahngdsal Lea Michele, I want to listen to you doing Broadway show tunes for the rest of my God given life), where Quinn has this self satisfied smirk on her face while talking to Coach Sylvester, and it turns into this, this haunted smile that’s just kind of frozen in place after years of practice.

I really liked that it cut to Santana right after that, especially as Rachel is singing “we did what we had to do”. What I want to know is why Santana Fucking Lopez, of all people, felt that she had to get a boob job. At sixteen years old. The thought kind of boggles my mind, especially since Santana has always been portrayed as the confident, fearless HBIC, who thinks of herself as hot shit. Which I mean, she is. So why, WHY does the poor girl think people need to notice her more? Why does she need them to so badly? That right there just unveiled a whole other side of the character, and honestly? I kind of love it. TELL ME YOUR ISSUES. Uh, sorry. Psych major. Ahem. Plus, look. Naya was great in that office scene too. There was a perfect mixture of quiet insecurity, and pained anger/hurt/frustration when she was talking to Sue.

Since the episode was about more than just Quinn/Santana (unfortunate though that may be), let’s move on shall we? Sunshine’s audition was beautiful, absolutely gorgeous. It’s insane how that teeny, tiny body contains such a huge, powerful voice. And her “diva off” with Rachel in the bathroom had me rolling, holy fuck I thought it was hilarious. Rachel is getting all intense, and up in her ~grill, while Sunshine only looks adorably pleased to be singing along, just nodding her head like yeah. It was, frankly, downright awesome. Even if "Telephone" is now far too overplayed. And ok, let me state for the record: I know that what Rachel did to Sunshine was wrong. I get that, I truly do. She was 100% in the wrong, no doubt about that. Yet at the same time…I still ended up feeling sorry for her.

It’s just…glee club is all that Rachel has, y’know? That voice of hers is the only way she’s ever gonna get out of the lame, podunk town where everyone (with the exception of Finn - for now) can barely stand to be around her. If Rachel had friends, even just one, then she might not be so damn insecure all the time. Unfortunately, however, she does not. As a result, her talent has become so closely tied with her self worth, it’s no wonder she feels threatened when someone who could potentially replace her comes along. I mean, sending the new girl to a(n inactive) crack house was a little (or ok, a lot) extreme, but then again…this is the same person who got a teacher fired because he wouldn’t give her the solos she wanted. It’s not exactly out of character. And this time, she actually felt remorseful! Growth.

Tl; dr - Rachel needs friends. Preferably in the form of Quinn Fabray.

lol wait, who I am kidding? This whole post is tl;dr, not just that last paragraph. The gist of it is: Glee is back, and that makes me happy. Especially since next week is the Britney Spears tribute, and you know what that means, right?
