As was perhaps to be expected in such an environment, Darcy had taken of late to a decidedly more casual manner of dress. Jane had risen at the knocking upon the door and she excused herself from her conversation with Elizabeth to greet the visitor, calming both Kojak and Lady in the process. "Down," she instructed in a simple, calm voice to which they listened.

Elizabeth had just risen to her feet (one of which was still bandaged from her adventure with the dinosaurs) when Mr Darcy entered the room, and from his manner of dress and the formality of his expression she knew he was about something - but this, she had not exactly expected. Such a thing was said quite evenly and she beckoned the dogs with her as she eased in to kiss Elizabeth upon the head. "I shall be back later," she promised, giving her hand a squeeze.

And when she closed the front door, she made sure that they would have their privacy.

Darcy felt a momentary pang at having put a pregnant woman out of her own home -- He'd thought only that she might retire to one of the other rooms, not leave the house altogether -- but it was short-lived, as the bang of the door closing seemed to echo ( ... )
