December had seemed to come upon the island at breakneck speed, taking with it the warmer climate and fair weather. Darcy was intensely glad that the house itself was all but completed by the time they were beset with the snow, for construction would have been rendered impossible. Elizabeth was well bundled up against the snow; being enchanted with the changes to the island did not make the weather any less cold. It did not deter her from taking her usual daily walks about the island, however, and it certainly did not deter her from going out with Mr Darcy when he came to call on her that afternoon.

"I am beginning to believe that the impossible is natural to this place," Darcy answered from his place at Elizabeth's side. The delicate weight of her hand against his arm was heartening, and on this day he needed such encouragement. Despite her previous praise of the unfinished building, he had fears that something might not be to Elizabeth's particular liking. "Perhaps that is all that could be expected of a place that brings people from so many worlds without will or warning," said Elizabeth. "If there came a stretch of days were there was nothing absurd, I would suspect there is something quite wrong with the place." She was babbling a little, she knew, but it was from excitement; she could hardly wait to see what New Pemberley looked like now, for it was the place that she would soon call her home.

"Absurdity is a matter of perspective, don't you you find?" Darcy inquired, glad enough for Elizabeth's exuberant babbling, for it distracted from his own anxiety. "I believe I have never seen a place where such an idea was better illustrated on a daily basis."
