It was pretty bad for the first two weeks, it's getting better now though. Before the surgery it took 3 people to help me stand, one to do nothing but keep the arm from moving, it was not pretty at all. I'm still having issues of course, like I can't lift my arm so, I can only wear button down the front shirts, and my jeans have to have stretch (or be sweats, etc) or I can't get them buttoned because I can't yet put any real strain on the arm to pull the button to the hole. In fact, my friends had to loan me clothes because I own mostly tees, pull-overs, and jeans that don't work for me right now. Then there is my not being able to drive, or even close my own car door, or take care of things as basic as washing my own hair, fun fun

After my bad car accident I was amazed at all the things I had taken for granted before that I suddenly was unable to do for myself. Hopefully you have some support that is able to give you a hand in doing some of those things.
Good luck with the ortho next week. I hope you'll give us another update on how that goes. The fact that the nerves in your hand weren't damaged though is awesome, that's a big positive. I'll be here routing for you and cheering you on during physio. :) The pain will be worth it in the end and you have full use with no pain once more. *hugs*
