Carnivel

Had a first read of Carnivel today, or of the 12 minutes I have first-drafted of it. It was pretty rocky, as it has lots of get-lost-easy traps in it, and it was just a sight read.

Regardless, it was a big reality check for me. I need to rework a LOT of it, especially for balance. I WAY over-brassed it.

It sounded really cool!! everyone i talked to thought it was really fun to play, and some wanted to perform it. I would at least!

Nice to hear that. I actually liked how it sounded... it just sounded almost nothing like I expected it to sound, so I was in quite a bit of shock.

In any case, I'm hoping to have the rest of it (another 5 minutes or so) done and the whole thing ready to play for spring.

I'm toying with the idea of making two pieces out of it... one to be played like it happened yesterday (and maybe even more insanely so), and another that I revise the crap out of to sound like I had expected it to sound like. Sort of a variation on how Ives had Three Places in New England, then just took the march out and put it all in one place for Country Band March.
