Makai Kingdom

Holy Crap on a Stick! This game is good! No, not good, fricken amazing! (And it’s a lot of other fricken things too. Just play, you’ll understand.)

Cross-posted.

Nippon Ichi has done it again, Makai is the love child of their two other great titles: Disgaea and Phantom Brave. It takes what honestly is some of both titles best elements and boils them down with a whole lot of new elements to make a hilarious and fun title to play.

Let me break it down:

What they took from Disgaea -

The large selection of classes and various upgraded versions of those classes. For those who hammered away at the big D for hours to unlock the Star Mage, Samurai, etc these and more are at your fingertips to develop.

Easy to get to random dungeon goodness! Unlike in Phantom Brave where you had a crop of Dungeon Monks standing around taking you to complex random dungeons that required you to have Title Masters and Fusionist on hand to gain the benefit from…now, you just go to the Makai gate and select…Free Underworld (Dungeon.) One click and its right into random run! It’s all the greatness of the item dungeons from Disgaea just with more goodies to be found.

The Execute command. Time your attacks. Stage combos! Do all the cool things you could do in Disgaea with multiple party members at once. It adds a new level of timing to this game.

Equipable items beyond the weapon! It’s more like Disgaea than Phantom Brave this time around. But you can still equip weird items like trees and phones, etc.

What they took from Phantom Brave -

Confining! Bind a soul to an object in order to make the person. But unlike Phantom Brave where objects in the battle map define what you can confine to…in Makai you just walk up and steal/pickup objects in the battles to bring them home so you can confine them there to create new subjects. Think of it as permanent confinement.

Full free roaming! Go anywhere on the map you want to. No boxes or grids just walk to your limit in Meters and your done! Trust me, this is very cool when using the Execute command to set off wicked mutli-member combos on NPCs. I greased countless early foes with this trick.

Pick up and Throw - From Disgaea but it handles more like Phantom Braves version of it.

Out of Bounds! - Too many hard foes? Need a break? Toss a few Out of Bounds!

New stuff!!! -

Invite! You don’t confine your party or bring them out of a gate into battle…just select a portion of land near the main character and PLOP there they are ready to attack that round! You can drop in whole armies in under 30 seconds. The only limit is the max Population a map allows. Some maps are strict forcing you to pull out your heavy hitters; others let you bring armies to the front.

Bases! Bases that give you bonuses to your battle grounds, places to store you PCs above the Population limit. Trust me, on some later battle grounds you need to have Hospitals, Forts, etc on hand to heal, help and supply more troops.

Vehicles! Everything from a hot motorcycle to troop stomping tanks! The game includes new classes expressly created to allow for these tools. Look for Engineers and Scientists early on so you can create/buy/upgrade these great devices!

Extra maps! Ever notice an early map was WAY too easy and you’d dye for a few extra foes? Well if you kill a key item or throw the right thing/person OB you unlock new map portions. Hidden objects and loads of money are to be found if you do this!

Btw: I personally love how there is a thief class right away in the game. Trust me. I have 3 active Pickpockets working in a squad I made up. I filch so much confinable stuff and equipable gear its silly!
