There had been some conflict over where exactly to hold the barbecue, but the Burrow had won on account of having the largest garden space. It was an obnoxiously sunny day, so some spare sheets had been transfigured into a large white marquee tent with cooling charms, allowing those who wanted to to eat in comfort at the supplied round tables.

Aubrey didn't know why he'd agreed to this. No, that was a lie. He knew why. He was here because Cade had asked. His, y'know, friend. At least neither Bolly nor Bolly's mum had cornered him yet. He was probably just being paranoid. He'd brought Scotch eggs-heh-and sausage rolls-maybe Bolly could be bribed-and some fish caught locally to Dunscaith, plus a large dish of Cranachan. Food was a good way to people's hearts, right?

“I blame you for this,” Aubrey said. “I was perfectly happy in the highlands, but then Weasleys happened.”

Pickup Quidditch sounds awesome but would be a bad idea all things considered, and bowls is only fun in big teams but even Lottie can't manage to get enough people hype about bowls, so Lottie wanders around instead, catching up with people and telling them to go try her cake. It's huge but it is cooked all the way through (which she points out every time to stave off flashbacks from the barbecue two years ago when it kinda wasn't). Still, it's kinda boring to just wander around and if she's just going to do nothing then she might as well try climbing the big tree about it.

Sofie catches up with her. "Remember when we used to race. Just run from one side of the garden to other?"
Reply
"Yeah!" she grins, "We could do a rematch later. I totally got faster." She very much should've, these days she's all legs.

Lottie has longer legs but Sofie's pretty fast. "We should totally do that," she pulls a face, "I found out that Blue used to let us win."

Having missed the last two--wait, shit, three--years of barbecues, Elaine has stepped up and shown up not just at a respectable time but also with enough alcohol to repay her debt to familial obligation and then some. Everyone should be very grateful she's spared them her cooking. She'd done a dutiful round and retreated into the house to look at the old pictures on the wall; only to be found by those looking, the drunks, and those lost on their way to the bathroom. No telling what glass of wine she's on, she looks too happy for it to be the first but otherwise it's a mystery.

"Aunt Elaine!" Bolly hug! "Where's Nadya? Do I have to testify?!"
Reply
"Nephew Bolly!" she returns the hug, but frowns, "Nadya's her own keeper and as a general rule probably not but I don't know what you're talking about specifically."
Reply
"They arrested Stan, y'know, from the manor, with the knife, and I was grounded for two weeks?" Bolly says impatiently. "So I thought maybe that means I have to do the testifying thing? But I don't really know how courts work."

Sofie is standing near the food table. She's watching the Roasted red pepper bruschetta she made. She and Stefan might have a contest going on to see who's food is better. "What? Sorry, I wasn't listening."

"I just asked if you know when Blue's going to make it?" he follows her gaze, "Is the food okay?"

At Blue's name she snaps to attention, "Yeah, he should be here. He said he was going to work on his bike some this morning so he probably got distracted." She looks back at the food, she leans in conspiratorially, "The food is fine. Stefan and I are having a contest to see who's food is better."

"Oooh," he laughs, "What did he bring and what did you bring?"

At some point Dae had ended up in maybe the wrong place at the wrong time and recognized as very technically an adult and so conscripted into watching the alcohol "just for a minute". It's been a lot longer than that. But he can't leave, if someone doesn't watch the booze he personally knows several kids who are going to get drunk and that needles at his sense of responsibility. No point in trying to get his phone to work inside the Burrow, and he felt weird drinking at a family thing, so it's really good someone left a pack of cards here. He kind of, maybe, remembers how to set up solitaire.

"You know we'll both get in trouble if someone catches you," Dae doesn't stop him, really, he just looks kind of put out by it.

Alfie sighs, he stares at Dae for a minute and then puts it back. "Arlo got one," he huffs.
