It's not legal for Sprint to force a contract renew to solve a customer issue when you're on a current contract. The worst they can make you do is pay full price for a replacement phone. They give you any lip, ask for a manager and/or full documentation of your current contract to be mailed to you. If you're past the official contract end point, just leave and get a new phone with someone else. I used to work at Nextel and ran as soon as I could when Sprint bought us, so I'm with you 100% on giving them the finger.
