Update on Portugal - Post 1: personal matters

Where to start? Well, I'm leaving this post unlocked (not my normal style at all) so that I can point non-LJ friends at it and update everybody at once. I'm really really grateful for all the support, advice, and care, but it is very time consuming trying to make sure everybody knows everything! We are truly and deeply thankful that we weren't out there at the time of the fire and that we and our family and friends are safe. It could have been very different.

Very grateful here as well. I am glad you felt able to post, and I certainly don't expect a reply.

I'm so sorry for all that you're suffering, in the aftermath of that terrible event, especially after all the work you'd both put into the house. I'm amazed that anything was salvageable! ..I suppose it's a 'silver lining' that the kitchen delay is now working in your favour. Who'd have thought!

Still thinking of you, at this time! ♥

Thank you. Yes, we have to regard the kitchen as a silver lining - though it is currently sitting in its flatpacks in the middle of my UK kitchen and tripping nme up at every turn. However, I am looking forward to it! Husband put a huge amount of physical work into the house, though of course we were both involved in planning and design. I think it might be even worse for him than for me.

:( I'm so sad for you. Thank goodness you weren't there, but oh, the trees! They take so long to regenerate. And old houses are unique. *cwtches*

Virtual cwtches are much appreciated. We have lost a huge number of trees - olives, citrus, walnuts, vines. There may be EU compensation but it doesn't do the replanting or the growing. Olives are all protected trees because they take so long to mature and are so special but of course fire takes no notice of that. Olives and olive oil will be expensive next year - a lot of Portuguese oil was bottled and sold by Italy. I adored my orange and lemon trees - I have one bucket of windfall oranges - and some lemon cordial in the UK freezer from last year. And that's it.
