A tragedy, on that scale would take a long time to overcome, even in a comparatively prosperous country, let alone one with a struggling economy.

It will take a great deal of time - and we feel incredibly lucky that we are not personally tied to the area in that we have a house in UK. But we also feel we want to help. Husband is taking stuff out in the van for people - a drop in the ocean but sometimes easier for them to organise than any commercial deliveries.

It seems crazy that the govt have decided that an inquiry is not needed. It must be, for the area to heal, if nothing else. It's heart-breaking to think that all those peoples lives and livelihoods are lost, and yet no one in wider Europe let alone the world seemed to notice or care. As for aid money going missing, this is the EU not Africa! Unbelievable! Sorry, I am getting angry at injustice or I would cry for all those dead.

I think those of us involved are doing enough crying for the world. I am glad if I can make the rest of you angry... One of my Portuguese friends now tells me there was horrendous destruction on the coast, too, but nobody knew - it wasn't reported outside Portugal at all and within Portugal the communications were so missing or erratic that it just didn't get 'broadcast'.
