I finally dug up the original press release that I remembered seeing a while back. Please note, I have not read the report in question, just the press release, linked to below; I thought it might be another data point to consider.

http://www.aauw.org/newsroom/pressreleases/042307_PayGap.cfm

"Ten years after graduation, women fall further behind, earning only 69 percent of what men earn. Even after controlling for hours, occupation, parenthood, and other factors known to affect earnings, the research indicates that one-quarter of the pay gap remains unexplained and is likely due to sex discrimination." {Emphasis mine.)

I have been stewing over this for a bit but nothing coherent is coming up. I am very curious to see what other folks have to say.

I'm sorry, if I were a careful reader I would have realized that this was the starting point of the original Washington Post article.

Funny how they seem to be reaching exactly opposite conclusions, though, no?

I am livid after reading this article. I *did* choose a money major -- I went into computer science. 20+ years of programming, and I *still* didn't make as much money as my now-husband. Which part of "controlling for occupation" does that writer not understand??
