Point 1 was well known for awhile, but will supposedly be addressed by Apple in the near future. It sucks, and it's dumb to launch without it, but I fully expect that custom ringtones will be a reality soon.
Point 2... Wow. That's asinine, but I'm not 100% sure that it's strictly an Apple problem. In the past, Cingular has pulled very similar tricks to switch contacts out, particularly if you're demanding a brand new SIM. It seems to me that AT&T is working from the standpoint that most people are Windows users, and thus will have Windows software. A goof, but certainly not an invalid assumption.
There are SIM readers that you can purchase. I'm not sure whether or not there is Mac support.
It was going to be hard to live up to the hype. I think the iPhone came off lukewarm mostly because everyone had such high expectations. The interface itself seems great, but the low-speed is really the killer for me.
You might (if you haven't / didn't) ask AT&T if they could pull the contacts off the SIM in some other format. Maybe not now, but when/if you think about moving in the future -- especially if Apple lets us add ringtones (leaving only the contacts as the barrier). They did seem to assume that everyone was using Windows.
