Non-spoiler commentary on 9: It was pretty, but I left unsatisfied. Much more could have been done with what was present in the movie, but it wasn't capitalized on.

1) When it's revealed that the talisman traps the souls and that The Machine is the intellect of man without the soul, hence why it turned against mankind, I thought that perhaps the nine dolls needed to allow each of their souls to become combined within The Machine in order to make it whole, so that it could complete its intended purpose of progress and rebuilding the world (even if the world is now devoid of humans). Depressing as hell, but it'd make sense given what was revealed of the world.

I thought the exact same thing. I think this would have been a very satisfying ending, since it would show sacrifice and overcoming fear (it could have been the redemption of 1) for the greater good.

2) Use the talisman to return the doll's souls back to the doll bodies. It's established that they know how to build and repair the bodies.

This would have worked, too.

Have you checked out the short on which the movie was based? I liked it more than the movie.

Yeah. Sancho and I talked about it and we're more or less in agreement with you. And watch the short it was based off of by the same director. I think you get more of a feel for what 9 was supposed to be, but a few too many fingers stretched it out into what it is, without really adding enough new material to make it interesting. Or rather the new material added wasn't fleshed out enough and didn't jive with the rest of the movie ( ... )
