We went to see Avatar this weekend, and I'd have to agree with you. We both really enjoyed it, both as a story and as a graphics "show-off". The seamless blending of live action and CG did pretty dang well in my book. Now I have to go see Sherlock Holmes...
I still stand by my original review of Avatar over on my LJ, so I won't go into it any more here.
The thing that kind of annoyed me about Sherlock Holmes was the Adler character. She didn't exist in the books and her presence in the movies was not only out of character for the Holmes' style, but was somewhat disjointed, in general. It feels like she was just added in to make American audiences feel more comfortable watching a movie completely filled with British accents.
I liked the depictions of both Holmes and Watson. It didn't bother me at all that Watson was butched up. :-) It made the two seem like a nice partnership. I feel like Ritchie did Holmes a service by portraying him more as he was in the books and less like the cheesy serials from the past. Hopefully Ritchie will be at the reins for the inevitable sequel.

Irene Adler was indeed in the Sherlock Holmes stories. Mentioned in a few, though only physically present in one:
A Scandal in Bohemia
