afteriwakeSummary: I did a bit of a rewrite with this one.
It was late, almost 10:30 and all Drew wanted to do was go home and sleep. Normally he would've been off around six, but there had been a break an important case, so he and Emilio had gone off to pick up the suspect. All he had to do now was give his finished report to Yvet and he could leave. The only problem was, she didn't seem to be in her office and no one knew where she'd run off to.
Instead of waiting around for his boss, he decided to just leave the file on her desk and go. Which was easier said than done. Yvet's desk was a sea of papers and case folders, some Drew recognized as more than six months old. Eventually he just placed it on the keyboard, which was the only clear space on the desk.
Just as he turned to leave, the phone began to ring. After about five rings, he realized that it wasn't going to Yvet's voice mail anytime soon and finally answered. "Detective Hagen, NOPD?" he said into the receiver. No one responded and if it weren't for the sound of people in the background and the faint sound of breathing, he would've assumed that the person had hung up. "Hello?" he said.
A few seconds later, there finally was a response. "I'm sorry, what did you say your name was?" A woman asked. She had a thick southern accent, which he recognized as Louisiana.
"Detective Hagen," he said again. "Drew Hagen."
"That's what I thought you said. By chance are you any relation to John and Samantha Hagen?"
Drew noted the way the woman hesitated a little when mentioning John's name. "They're my cousins." He specifically avoided referring to John in the past tense. "If you don't mind my asking ma'am, but who am I speaking to?"
The woman gave a soft embarrassed laugh. "Oh I'm sorry, where are my manors. Calleigh Duquesne."
The name was not unknown to Drew. Even though he had never had the pleasure of meeting Calleigh in person, he knew that she had dated John and that she had watched him kill himself. Still, he tried to make light of the situation and asked, "Surprised there's another Detective Hagen running around?"
Calleigh laughed softly again. "Honestly, I'm more shocked that there's a Hagen in New Orleans."
Drew laughed a little too. "I'm still considered kind of new here."
"How long?" she asked
"A little over two years with the 8th District but I've been in New Orleans for about three years."
"Night shift?"
"Yup," he said with a slight nod.
"I worked the night shift when I was there too about eleven years ago."
"So you know just how crazy it can get around here," Drew said and openly laughed.
Calleigh was a bit taken aback by his laugh. It was almost identical to John's and it took her a few moments to come back to herself and realize that she wasn't talking to John. "Yeah," she said with a shake of the head, trying to clear her thoughts. "Does get pretty crazy up there. 'Specially around Mardi Gras."
"Oh tell me about it," Drew laughed again. After a few moments of silence, he said, "This is kinda like a bad soap opera, don't'cha think?"
Calleigh thought it over for a minute and he was right, it was like a soap opera. She had dated and worked with John, then after he died, worked with his sister (but not dated) and now she was on the phone with his cousin who worked where she used to. "You're right."
They were quiet again for a few moments, until Drew broke the silence again, when he remembered that he was in Yvet's office. "Were you looking for Yvet?"
"I was," Calleigh replied, "but it's not important."
"Are you sure? Maybe I can help, or try to find her?"
"No, really it's fine. She called earlier and left a message. I was just returning her call."
"Well if I see her, I'll tell her you called."
"Thank you," Calleigh replied.
He nodded. "Not a problem."
"Take care of yourself, Detective Hagen."
"You too Lt. Duquesne."
And with that exchange, the called ended.
Drew placed the phone back on the hook. Some how he managed to find Yvet's sticky notes and a pen and wrote that Calleigh had called and placed it on top of his case file. Once he was sure the note was firmly stuck, he sighed and left the office.
