Intro to Me

As I sit down to write this introduction, I'm realizing that it really is difficult to write an introduction to oneself without writing one's entire memoirs. This is part vanity, I'm sure, but also part desire to give an accurate picture of who I am. I imagine that most folks with a true interest in psychology are constantly grappling with that ( Read more... )

I had to comment on your blog...I mean what are the odds of two Joanna's in the same room? Pretty high, I'd say ;-)
Congratulations on your pregnancy, having our son absolutely changed my life; when he was born it was like my heart's capacity to love quadrupled.
When I was a little girl, my neighbor was a Quaker and I've always had great respect and admiration for your religion.
It sounds like you are going to be a wonderful mom, expecting a child *should* provoke thought and self-examination. Parenthood is the biggest job we will ever have and the most rewarding. Also, you enjoy teaching, which requires patience and listening ability [so does music!]; your child is going to have a great mom.

Parenthood is pure joy. There is nothing that even comes close.
The most relevant part of parenting in this case is its constant humbling. I learn everyday that I know less, and this ignorance exists on so many levels. I've come to enjoy it. Just today, my daughter asked me why the clouds move...
hmm... should I tell her about air pressure that movement of molecules? or should I go as far as discussion dew point (it was just starting to sprinkle)? or should I say that they're dancing? or...
...and as I was folding in on my mind, she proclaimed that it wasn't the cloud but our car that was moving. Of course, she was right. There are so many ways to know, and children show us daily this diversity.

Dewey once said that "education is not the preparation for life, it is the life itself". I agree with him completely. A life of wonder is partially empty, and that is why it is so fulfilling.

I look forward to learning with you.

Mike
