Is this thing on? Tire advice.

So it's been a solid 5 years since I've posted on here...I've grown up (somewhat) and now ride a metric cruiser that I am ready for its first new rear tire. The Yamaha dealer that I bought it from and had a decades long relationship with went out of business, leaving me to seek out a new place to get my tires from ( Read more... )

Bikeworx moved out to Hudson MA from Maynard. I haven't had to have any service done to a bike in a long while but I used to trust them when they were in Maynard. (The fact that they're no longer on public transport and my lack of car-enabled friends means that a trip to Hudson from Belmont is a nonstarter.) They can pretty much order anything you might want from Parts Unlimited or Tucker Rocky, or at least they could when I was a customer of theirs, so the selection of tires ought to be about as broad as it'll get for your make and model.

Again, it's been soem while since I've been to their shop, so my info might be a tad out of date...but that's where I'd check first.

Thanks! I'll check them out. Since the last time I heard from you I've gone from couldn't locate Belmont on a map to lived there 4 years before I bought my house. I miss Belmont...if I keep playing my lottery numbers/convincing Mitt Romney I'm a great LDS guy I might be able to live there again.

I went to Greater Boston motorsports for 4 stickers but I found it to be a hackorama...they would put a sticker on a live pig if it sat still for a moment plus they seemed willing to do a backflip if I only purchased a tire from them for a 100 more than I could find online.

I haven't ridden in quite some while, unfortunately. My Bandit needs some mechanical attention, there are no shops anywhere on public transport I trust to do the work, I don't know anyone with a car who can give me a ride home from anywhere else, and I don't have and can't afford homeownership so that I can build out the sort of workshop space in which I could do the work myself. (At least, not unless I want to buy something west of the Quabbin somewhere, and commute the 3 hours to downtown Boston from there every day.)

Hey! So, RJ'S in Naahua is definitely worth a call. Good guys with brains in their heads. Billerica Yamaha is my go-to for dealer studd, but their tire prices aren't great and it might be kind of out of your way. I wouldn't really recommend Bikeworx these days sadly.. It's always better/cheaper if you can pull your wheels and bring them to the shop off the bike, but, you know, you do what you can. :-)

+1 comment above. Or find a friend who's handy with a C clamp and tire spoons or manual tire changer and show you how to do it yourself survival style. All depends on what level you'd like to get dirty and how much time you have to spare.
