Well, he put 900 miles on it, kick starting it every time. So he did get past the OFF thing, even if he never figured out the starter interlock.
I'm wondering if he had that switch set to OFF for the whole life of the bike, never looking at it, and just turned it on and off with the key. Then when it got squirrely because of the missing bolts, he asked someone he knew, who had some experience of motorcycles, to test ride it. That person flicked the switch to ON because that's what ya do when you actually know something. Which killed it dead. Time to drop it off at the home of the motorcycling aunt and uncle even though they said no.
Also, we're still trying to figure out what the RAY SNITEL is. The wiring diagram is a bad phone picture of a bad photocopy so it's hard to trace. But there it is, clearly labeled RAY SNITEL.

I can't imagine why anyone would have such difficulty operating such a machine.
