Friday Puzzle #171 - US Team Logo puzzle

Oct 05, 2012 00:01

With a super-sized team of US stars this year at the WSC and WPC, we've been sporting a new t-shirt with a team logo designed by me. While we've been battling for WPC victory, my competitors have been stuck trying to puzzle out what to do with the logo on our backs. I leave you, the viewers at home, with the same challenge.

What has this to be with me if I'm not American? I'm also not a puzzler.

I think I found a mistake. I mean, you can't even fit six stars into some of those regions at all!

Good luck, but Go Canada.

Sadly, no Canadians this year. But if they were here I'm sure they would be performing well. I grew up an hour from Toronto though, so I might be 20% culturally Canadian from watching some of your television shows?

That sucks about no Canadians. However, I accept you as Canadian, and will now root 20% for you.

My first attempts to figure out the rules have failed.
There are 6 gray regions and 6 stars, so my assumption was you had to place 1 star per gray region such that each line (of 12 squares wrapping around the cube) had one star. But that leads to a contradiction pretty quickly.

I tried a similar tactic with 2 stars per region and finally 6 stars per face. I guess I'm making some incorrect assumptions, so I look forward to the explanation.

The 6 stars was a stylistic design (at the time there were 6 US team members I knew of on our 2 A-teams). I suppose I could have also gone with 50. In either case, the puzzle uses neither 6 nor 50 stars but something perhaps in between.

The U S and A regions are meaningful regions.

Is this Norinori on the surface of half a cube? I think it has a ton of solutions. :)

Actually, once seeing Figonometry's puzzle reminded me that just because something's a Star Battle doesn't mean you must have two stars per region, this wasn't extreme in difficulty.
